- Reduce water usage.
- Eliminate leaks.
- Lower maintenance cost.
- Reduce the quantity of planting medium.
- Prevent wooden planter boxes from rotting out.
- Prevent Solar Gain from steaming the root ball.
- Hide drip irrigation systems and electrical wiring.
- Catch or redirect water overflow with side wall threaded drain ports.
- Tapered shape makes replanting slip-out-easy and saves shipping costs.
- Less expensive, tougher, and more waterproof than fiberglass liners.
Planter Liner and Drainage Design.
Generally, more container-grown plants die from drowning than from lack of water. “Old school” drain holes on the bottom and gravel drainage medium simply do not work and will quickly clog. Plants in pots, or single wall planters like dark fiberglass or aluminum, are often over watered because they look droopy when in fact they suffering from thier root ball being steamed by solar gain. DeepStream liner inside a planter box design eliminate solar gain and we elevate the drainage hole center approximately 2″ up the sides of your liners to provide a “reservoir” for the tap roots and allow clay “fines” present in almost all planting mediums to settle instead of clogging drains and drowning the plants.
DeepStream pioneered modern planter liner drainage practices with side-wall drains that prevent silt blocking geotextile drain covers, 3-layer drain filter pads with Tremdrain for increased drainage area and BioBarrier to prevent root blockage. We place from one to three 3/4″ threaded drainage ports on our 16 proprietary stock plastic planter liners, to which various plugs, hose barbs, and valves may be attached. Liners are non-structural and are meant to be placed inside planter boxes. Drip trays are available for planters used on covered balconies or indoors.
Depending on your plants, planting mixture, and local weather, you may need to add more drains. Additional drain holes can be added to your planter liners as required by drilling additional holes in the side walls.
Cost Saving Tips
You can extend the life of existing or new garden planters by using plastic planter liners. Liners contain the planting medium, keeping the soil away from the exterior shell of the planter box, and controlling drainage. This is especially important for wooden planters. Buildings often have concrete planters, cast-in-place, which often crack in just a few years due to settling and now leak. This causes expensive structural problems by rusting the rebars and splitting the concrete in a process called spalling. In some instances they can benefit from a retrofitted molded or custom-welded plastic liner with flanges over the top of the existing planter side walls..
NOTE: If you’re building, or buying planters that require liners keep in mind that our proprietary rotomolded planter liners, available in 16 common sizes, are the least expensive option. Our custom welded liners require a bit more material and a lot more labor and are therefore more expensive, although are still much less expensive, more durable and more waterproof than fiberglass liners.
