Case Study Project: USO at LAX. Architects chose Planter Anchored Screen Walls for the renovation and relocation at Los Angeles International Airport .
In 2017-2018, the Bob Hope USO at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) underwent a significant renovation and relocation project with an outdoor space created using DeepStream Designs planter-anchored glass screen wall as a security perimeter to define the outdoor dining patio. This initiative was part of Project: USO at LAX to enhance the experience for service members.

Key details about the project:
- Relocation: The USO center moved from a previous location to a new 7,000 square foot facility at the base of the iconic Theme Building at LAX. This move was part of a larger capital improvement project at the airport.
- Timeline: The groundbreaking ceremony for the new center took place in December 2017, and opened in spring or late July 2018.
- Architect: The new center was designed by world renowned Gensler Architects as part of the USO’s broader project initiatives at LAX.
- Amenities: In addition to the outdoor patio for dining, created with DeepStream Designs planter-anchored glass screen walls, the new USO center was designed to provide welcoming and comfortable indoor spaces for service members and their families. It features a snack bar, dining area/lounge, private family rooms, video chatting booths, showers, a movie theater, a sound-proof nap room, video games, a children’s play area, and space for luggage storage and charging electronics.
- Purpose: The renovated USO aims to support the mission of connecting service members to their families, homes, and country, to improve their quality of life, boost morale, and welcome troops home from deployment, as seen in the overarching goal of Project: USO at LAX.
DeepStream Designs Contributions: Architects chose DeepStream modern planters for their:
- Modern Design Aesthetics: Planters and screen walls blend with the Architecturally Iconic Theme Building, the visual focus of the entire airport, as it sits atom-like at the center, representing the atomic age in which it was designed.
- Functionality: Modular, large modern planter system engineered with our proprietary marine-anodized aluminum extrusions that will stand up to the coastal environment, while providing low-key security to the military families using the USO. The planters are equipped with the most advanced draining liners in the industry, which promote plant health while reducing maintenance.
- Cost Savings: With the weatherproof, waterproof, low maintenance materials and Lifetime Structural Warranty provided by DeepStreams planter-anchored security screen walls, they were judged to provide the lowest cost of ownership over time.
- Value Engineering: At the architects’ request, additional inexpensive DeepStream Design panels were used to camouflage existing industrial gates and chain-link fences that secure service areas, like trash and dangerous electrical equipment, for a unified modern appearance.
- Sustainable Design backed by a Lifetime Structural Warranty: This project was a donation-funded adaptive reuse renovation so the product selection criteria ensured that the donations funded a project that was going to last for decades of heavy commercial use as part of Project: USO at LAX.
- Environmental Commitment: Not only did DeepStream use recycled plastic and infinitely recyclable glass and aluminum in its American handcrafted products, but this project also generated a contribution to Trees for the Future that planted 550 trees in the project’s name.
